Description

'Gaïtani' by the Trio Tzane is a charming and refreshing release gathering musical influences from Greece, Turkey and Bulgaria. Xanthoula Dakovanou, Sandrine Monlezun and Gül Hacer Toruk are each specialists in the music of one of those countries and they combine to great effect on an exceptional album of haunting songs. Tzane, a Persian word that travelled down the centuries from Iran to Turkey, and then to Greece and Bulgaria, means 'soul'. Trio Tzane began with a meeting in Paris in 2007 - three women, three singers, three nationalities. Deciding to join their voices in polyphony, they tell stories whose roots may be different, yet are very similar. They sing in Greek, Turkish, Bulgarian, and other languages, relating stories of the Balkans, both in their own way and in those of their ancestors, mixing vocal improvisations with newly composed pieces. On 'Gaïtani', they take the listener on a voyage from Epirus to Turkey by way of Macedonia, Bulgaria, and the Black Sea - a story told by three voices that intersect then wander away from each other in singular harmonies. Jean-François Zygel, one of the most influential and well-known classical music artists in France, especially recommends the Trio Tzane who appeared on one of his famous shows on French television last summer. Personnel: Xanthoula Dakovanou (voice), Sandrine Monlezun (voice), Gül Hacer Toruk (voice) Guest musicians: Nicolas Beck (double bass), Adrien Espinouze (ney), Paul Goodman (saz), Dimitar Gougov (gadulka, tapan), Antoine Morineau (tombak, daff), Taxiarchis Vasilakos (accordion)
