Soul – a genre fused of the very best elements of gospel music, R&B and jazz; originated within the African American community in the late 1950s and ‘60s. And it wasn’t long before the genre took the world by storm with its infectious lyrics and rhythmic beats. Spawning some of the world’s biggest ever and most acclaimed music stars, including: Aretha Franklin, Diana Ross & The Supremes, The Jackson 5, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, James Brown and Lionel Ritchie to name a few. Particularly led by the record label, Motown; soul soon became a global phenomenon, infiltrating the UK charts by the mid-60s, and continuing its domination right through the forthcoming decades. As the genre’s popularity grew, so did its influences; adapting to the time in which the hits were produced, the melodic sound of the ‘60s soon made way for the funk-tinged sounds of 1970s America. Soul Legends is an album that encapsulates the very best of this truly golden age of timeless classics, which still have as much impact over half a century later.
