As an antidote to the hugely popular ‘Britpop’ phenomenon, ‘pure-pop’ made a massive comeback where Take That, Boyzone and Westlife (all on this album) sold millions of singles and as the popularity of this re-energised pop grew, a huge line-up of acts dominated the charts and achieved global success on a scale never seen before. UK acts Steps, S Club 7, Busted, McFly and The Sugababes enjoyed multiple Number 1 hit singles alongside US acts with a sound defined by exquisite production values. Britney Spears, The Backstreet Boys, Christina Aguilera, Ricky Martin and *NSYNC - all included here - achieved record-shattering album sales across the world. The popularity of music-based TV talent shows introduced a raft of new pop stars and we celebrate the successes of Girls Aloud, Will Young, Hear’Say, Shayne Ward, JLS and Gareth Gates.
