This release documents the Omer Avital Quintet (with Avishai Cohen, Joel Frahm, Daniel Freedman and Omer Klein) at the end of their acclaimed month-long 2006 Smalls Jazz Club residency. Recorded in one day in a bare-bones studio, the music is energetic, raw and direct. The middle-eastern and Moroccan influenced compositions - all penned by Avital - provide the perfect vehicle for the rhythmic complexity and lyrical power the cast is known for. It has taken a long while for this material to get released but judging by the empathy clearly shared by the musicians, the outstanding musicianship and the sheer joy that permeates these songs, it was worth the wait.
