Among the many gems from Art Pepper’s superlative discography is a January 19, 1957 studio date in which the altoist fronted a quartet featuring the rhythm section from Miles Davis’ first great quintet (1955-1957): pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones. Ten exquisite tracks were recorded in a period of just five hours, nine of which made their way onto the album Art Pepper Meets The Rhythm Section (Contemporary Records C- 532). Two compositions were written at the date: “Waltz Me Blues” and “Red Pepper Blues”. The other tracks consisted of versions of jazz standards. Art had never previously played with any of the members of The Rhythm Section, and never would again with the exception of Paul Chambers. The complete album The Art Pepper Quartet (Tampa Records RS-100), which finds Pepper again in a quartet format, has been added as a bonus.
