Description

2 LPs on 1 CD! The complete original LP Rushing Lullabies (Columbia CS8196), showcasing Jimmy Rushing. Featuring Buddy Tate, Sir Charles Thompson (on organ), Ray Bryant (on piano), and Jo Jones. As a bonus, the complete album Brubeck & Rushing (Columbia CS8353), which marks Rushing s only recorded encounter with the Dave Brubeck Quartet. Includes 16-page booklet. King of the blues shouters, Jimmy Rushing was born in Oklahoma on August 26, 1901. Also known as Mr. Five by Five (a nickname that refers to the dimensions of his girth and stature), he was one of the most ubiquitous vocalists in blues/jazz and one of the few fi gures to have lived through the evolution of the music during the heyday of its four epicenters: New Orleans, Kansas City, Chicago and New York. Rushing was featured on more than 250 sessions or live recordings between 1929 and 1971. Rushing Lullabies presents Mr. Five by Five in a more or less familiar context, surrounded mostly by old co-workers and ex-members of the Basie band. Our bonus album, Brubeck & Rushing, however, is a unique musical experiment. It is the only recorded occasion on which Rushing was paired with the Dave Brubeck Quartet. Jimmy said he wanted to record with me during a train trip on a tour of England , Brubeck explained. He engineered the whole thing. All I had to do was show up with the arrangements of the tunes he wanted to do.
