The first album to be produced by Gilbert himself and featuring the usual wide variety of high class original O Sullivan compositions, Southpaw (1977) is the sound of an artist really enjoying the process of running things in the studio as he inspired superb performances from all concerned; including guitarist Chris Spedding, keyboard player Tony Hymas and the Mike Sammes Singers. The magnificent cover was produced by Bob Hook, occasional blues pianist on Gilbert s sessions and the only one of Gilbert s art-school friends who made it as a professional artist.
