Eugène Ysaӱe, one of the most celebrated and influential instrumentalists of his time, drew inspiration from Bach for his six sonatas for solo violin, producing works of extraordinary richness and formidable virtuosity. Frank Peter Zimmermann – who appeared in a Belgian TV documentary about Ysaӱe – has said that: “As a German violinist, I feel more strongly attracted to Ysaӱe’s works than to those or all the other composer-virtuosi from Paganini to Sarasate.”
