Dub Colossus are hailed as one of the most inventive fusion acts of recent years, with their blend of contemporary and traditional Ethiopian styles, jazz and dub reggae. This may have started out as a studio-based project, but Dub Colossus have gone on to prove that they are also a rousing live band, with originator Nick Page (aka Dubulah) stepping back and encouraging the Ethiopian musicians to dominate many of the songs on stage. The Ethiopian contingency includes two female singers, Tsedenia Gebremarkos, a fine, soulful performer and highly successful African pop star, along with the rousing Sintayehu 'Mimi' Zenebene, who runs a nightclub in Addis and has been described as 'Ethiopia's Edith Piaf'. They are joined by Teremage Woretaw, a traditional folk singer, an azmari, an exponent of the one-stringed messenqo violin, the veteran saxophonist and jazz exponent Feleke Hailu "the elder statesman of the band", and the extraordinary young pianist Samuel Yirga. As for Dubulah himself, he plays guitar, bass, harmonicas and keyboards, produced the set, and co-wrote several of the songs. With two albums successful albums now in hand - "A Town Called Addis" and "Through The Looking Glass" - Dub Colossus's forthcoming CD, "Dub Me Tender Vol 1 + 2" features tracks taken from both these albums and given the full dub treatment by Page. It's a real Ethio-Afrodub affair - from Roots to Ethio - flutes and back again…!
