Description
Producer, DJ and grime connoisseur Charlie Sloth commences an exciting new era in his career with his debut artist album ‘The Plug’. The first set of original material that Sloth has produced, masterminded and co-written, ‘The Plug’ features a who’s who from the urban community with Bugzy Malone, Stormzy and Giggs standing alongside breaking talent such as Aystar, Fredo and Lola Rae. While ‘The Plug’ opens with the funk-fuelled pop of the WSTRN collab ‘Take What’s Ours’, Sloth’s productions are often fiercely uncompromising, with Mic Righteous spitting vitriolic rhymes alongside Avelino’s precise flow on ‘Take It All’; Knytro’s attack complements stabbing synths and breakbeats on ‘Real Hard’; while the Sheffield and London scenes are united as Skinz and K Koke team up on ‘No Noise’. Yet as Sloth states, it’s a multi-faceted experience. Lola Rae (‘Pull You Up’) and Lil Kesh (‘Angelina’) deliver radically different takes on Afrobeat, and the album’s palette extends into sweet R&B (‘Think About Me’ featuring Wolfie), and dancehall fusion (‘What Can I Do’ featuring Sean Kingston, Spice and Lady Leshurr) but it’s the final track that presents the biggest surprise. A scorching summer smash in the making, ‘Walk Away’ is a world apart from anything that Sloth has released before. His production is rich with authentic reggae traits and organic instrumentation, while Donae’o’s soulful vocal provides its irresistible hook, and Jamaican dancehall star Konshens delivers its scintillating Caribbean vibe. Further talking points include Aystar’s characteristic Scouse-accented narrative on ‘Therapy’, and ‘Kendrick Lamar’, which finds Cadet praising the Californian star and critiquing the genre’s stereotypical themes.
