In 1960, celebrated jazz critic Nat Hentoff called Charles Mingus to record a number of sessions for the new Candid label. Mingus was given absolute freedom on these sessions, and most of the results were issued on the celebrated albums Newport Rebels (Candid CJS 9022), Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus (Candid CJS 9005), and Mingus (Candid CS 9021), all of which are included in their entireties on this 2-CD set. The former album makes reference to an alternative Newport Jazz Festival, featuring such artists as Mingus, Kenny Dorham, Ornette Coleman, and Max Roach, organized in July of 1960 in protest of Newport’s conservative and increasingly commercial booking policy. Despite the brevity of Charles Mingus’ working relationship with Candid, the bassist was quite happy with their association. Candid Records would disappear nearly six months after the last of these recordings was made.
