Three musician friends meet here for a programme devoted to Brahms s musical testaments. The 20-year-old clarinettist Raphaël Sévère, blessed with a magnificent sonority, and Adam Laloum, whose first disc was dedicated to Brahmsian twilights, together demonstrate that, in the burnished autumnal colours of these sonatas, the composer chose the clarinet to bid a melancholy farewell to the world. Victor Julien-Laferrière joins them for the elegiac Trio Op.114. Review 'there is so much colour and expressiveness in Severe s playing, and Laloum brings eloquent and purposeful authority to the piano part throughout. In short, this is one of the best modern recordings I ve come across of these two valedictory masterpieces. The Trio is just as successful ... Severe and his colleagues understand that this music needs to be shaped carefully, with great attention to detail, but never forced. The Scherzo is a beautiful example of all three players at their most sensitive and searching and the music always has a wonderful sense of direction and flow without ever being pushed. This is a beautiful account ...This is a lovely recording, and one to which I shall return often.'
