A Cartoon Network show, Yu Yu Hakusho is the animated story of a young but prodigiously tough schoolboy Yusuke. Though he is misunderstood, nobody is left in any doubt of the goodness of his heart when he dives in front of a car to save a child. A mysterious 700-year-old toddler called Koenma offers to restore his life if he fulfils an ordeal. But when Yusuke becomes flesh again, he realises he has the ability to see and hunt down demons. He has become a Spirit Detective. After many adventures in the first saga of the series, the second part sees Yusuke and his friends forced by criminals to take part in a Dark Tournament, where - as Team Urameshi - they must battle against teams of demon thugs or face the destruction of everything they love.February 2005 saw the release of Yu Yu Hakusho: Tournament Tactics on GBA in which players had to carefully choose their teams and tactics to progress further in the Dark Tournament. Now an action title gives them direct control over Yusuke, his friends, and even his enemies, in a 3D fighting game on PS2. Like its GBA brother, the game has been developed by Funimation. Appropriately for a game of an animated TV show, the graphics are in cel-shaded 3D, in the same style of other anime-based fighters like Dragonball Z: Budokai and Naruto. Taking control of characters such as Yusuke, Kuwabara, Kurama and Hiei, the player must battle through the evil Togoru brothers'Dark Tournament, where different rounds will feature different rules to vary the gameplay. Some fights will use a tag team of three players, some a solitary character. In some fights, your energy will slowly deplete regardless of how well you are doing, in others, you are not allowed to block or duck. Of course, there's also a skirmish mode where you can battle either against a CPU player or a friend. The game also features a token collection mode, and the tokens you collect, each of which represents a character, can be used to play a tactical board game. Fans of the series are sure to be equally delighted by the fact that the game features clips from the anime, all-new dialogue recorded especially for the game by the US voice cast, and sound effects faithful to the style of the show. |
