Update By Gamespot:

As part of its record-setting earnings report last month, Activision Blizzard confirmed that it was releasing DJ Hero this year. In a conference call with analysts, executives said that the Guitar Hero spin-off would be specifically hitting the Nintendo Wii and "a variety of platforms." Other than to express their enthusiasm, they declined to get more specific.

Today, though, Activision launched a teaser site for DJ Hero, which is rumored to feature a turntable peripheral similar to Guitar Hero's simulated instrument. Though it offers no new announcements, the site features official logos that reconfirm the Wii edition and reveal that the game is coming to the Xbox 360. The presence of an Xbox Live logo indicates that it will also have an online component of some kind.

Finally, the presence of the PlayStation logo indicates that the game will arrive for at least one of Sony's two consoles currently on the market. A PlayStation 3 version is all but assured, given that Activision has publically aired doubts about releasing new games for the PlayStation 2. In the same conference call referenced above, executives said that their continued support of the aging console--which was released in late 2000--is contingent on Sony cutting its price. Currently, the PS2 sells for $129.99 in North America.

Notably absent on the DJ Hero site are logos for the PC, DS, or the PSP, which has its own dedicated logo. Guitar Hero III was ported to the PC (and Mac) by Asypr in 2007, but no further series installments have been released for home computers. And though Activision has never released a rhythm game for the PSP, a DS DJ Hero is a possibility, given the wild popularity of Guitar Hero: On Tour and its sequel, Guitar Hero: On Tour Decades.

Eminem & Jay-Z to front DJ Hero

Earlier this month, Activision officially confirmed DJ Hero, the latest spin-off of its rhythm-game franchise, which ditches the guitar and melodic rock in favor of a turntable and scratch-heavy beats. Along with releasing photos of the DJ Hero Turntable Controller, the publisher said the Xbox 360, Wii, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 2 game would feature hip-hop, R&B, Motown, electronic, and dance genres, as well as let players produce their own tunes.

Today, Activision announced that hip-hop heavyweights Jay-Z and Eminem will help launch the DJ Hero franchise. Both artists have signed on to lend unnamed tracks to the game, and Activision also said that both artists will be the subject of downloadable content later this year.

Further, Activision said it has partnered with Jay-Z and Eminem on a special edition of DJ Hero. The custom package will include "an advanced version of the game's turntable controller," as well as a metal traveling case that doubles as a "performance-ready DJ stand" and two exclusive CD compilations that feature original mixes from each performer.

DJ Hero is one among a sea of Guitar Hero-related rhythm games set for release in 2009. With Guitar Hero: Greatest Hits penciled in for June and Guitar Hero 5 dated for September 1, Activision also expects to release Band Hero and Guitar Hero: Van Halen later this year.

Preview by Gamezone:

If one had to pigeon-hole Guitar Hero , while many titles could be applied, social gaming would have to be up there on the list. But Guitar Hero appealed to one side of the music spectrum. Anyone who has been to a dance club knows there is a whole other side to the music and it begins with the DJs who spin the platters at clubs.

Enter Freestyle Games, one of the newest development studios to join the Activision family. It seems that the folks at Freestyle have long been enamored with the DJ lifestyle as well as the skill these music spin artists create with a couple of turntables and a solid selection of songs and music samples. So, Freestyle decided to create a music-based game that incorporated that style of music. But it was not as simple as one might first think – after all, the initial driving force in the Guitar Hero franchise was the guitar peripheral. So Freestyle simply decided to do for DJ Hero what was done for Guitar Hero, build the appropriate peripheral and then turn players loose with music samples. Sure, there are note streams that need to be tagged, but there is plenty of opportunity to freestyle and create your own unique mixes and song samples.

DJ Hero is “all about the music” said the Freestyle reps. The game is easy to pick up and play, features a huge song list with more than 100 unique songs (some mixes were specially created by top DJs for the game). Not only were actual club DJs working on the game, but several of them appear as playable characters within the game itself.

The turntable peripheral (which Red Octane helped design) will allow players to mix and scratch, and the setup is actually a turntable and mixer combination, with an effects dial and cross-fader. The mixer element is detachable so that it can be flipped for left-handed players. While Guitar Hero had Star Power, DJ Hero has Euphoria, which doubles the combo multiplier.

The scratch directions are shown in the note stream and within the freestyle mode there is a rewind meter that players can use to back up the record and replay a section of the song. There are three buttons that reflect on the note stream, one for the first record, one for music samples and the third for the second record.

DJ Hero might have more of a younger draw initially, but the skill challenges in creating these dance songs, as well as the range of music is likely to draw in a huge following. It’s another example of innovation opening up new modes of gaming.

The title, shown off in May at an Activision pre-E3 event in Los Angeles, will be ready for retail in the fall.
