Reviewed by: Gavin Owen from Wiltshire Let’s get the bad points out of the way first. Firstly the included steering wheel Wii-mote holder is not as comfy as a Nintendo Mario Kart wheel. Seondly you have to use one of the preset control configurations - you can’t control functions to the buttons on the Wii-mote and Nunchuck yourself. Also, I would have liked a suggested-gear driving aid as on the GP series of games - really helps you to learn a new track. Finally, the frame rate drops quite often so that the graphics are not super-smooth. So far those are the only negatives I’ve encountered. Now for the positives. This is a proper Wii game - in other words it’s FUN! Having set up my profile I went straight into a quick race at Monaco and promptly destroyed several million virtual pounds-worth of F1 cars having assumed that this thing would drive like an arcade game. It does not, if you’re expecting to play this game and drive ten-tenths from the off you’ll be disappointed. It took me a few laps to learn to be gentle with the wheel, chucking it about won’t help, precision is required and to be really precise is going to take practice. It wasn’t long before I switched to Spa and was giggling away to myself as I dived through Eau Rouge in sixth and saw, heard and felt the car bottom out (need to change the setup) and then almost lost it on the exit. Graphically everything looks as good as you could expect from the Wii. All the track-side stands, buildings and scenery are faithfully reproduced. When using the pod-cam view the world gently slews and inclines to give you a sense of being on the ragged edge and if you lose it completely the world turns upside down before your very eyes. The engine sounds are very good and you can clearly hear when it’s time to change up a gear. The pit-to-car radio transmissions are a nice touch - always good to know you are catching up the car in front! Bottom line, if your only gaming platform is a Wii and you are an F1 fan, buy this game. |
