Ahhh, Golden Axe...the mere mention of the name happily tugs at this writer's heart-strings. It harks back to the days before you even knew there were such things as 'games magazines' (let alone online resources) and would buy a game simply on the strength of its cover, happily whiling away the hours of summer in a hot, sweaty room, glued to a screen displaying poorly animated 2-D barbarians. Ahem. Those were the days. Anyway, the much beloved arcade beat-em-up is finally making its return to our homes (we're discounting 2003's Sega Ages incident, in case you were wondering). What can we tell you about it' Not a huge amount, to be honest, as details are still scarce. This latest entry to the series is being developed by SEGA's recently-acquired studio Secret Level and it looks like they're taking a back to basics approach with an RPG twist. Players will charge into battle on the back of ferocious beasts or take their chances on foot, fighting a battle for the very survival of their species. They're promising an intense and unique fighting experience combined with an immersive role-playing element in which you'll be expected to recruit allies and lead your group to prevent the enslavement of all civilisation. Like you do. It's not the deepest or most original premise, but then again very few fantasy games can claim otherwise. This game does come with a strong pedigree however, and we're excited to see what Secret Level are going to do with Golden Axe on the next-gen platforms.
