We don't take much notice of politics here at SPOnG, but we do reckon that it was far more exciting when the Cold War was still one. OK, so we mostly weren't even born during the Cuban Missile Crisis, and our understanding of the situation in the 80s is informed mainly by a knowledge of Top Gun and From Russia With Love. But still, it all sounds very exciting, and aren't things simpler when the world is neatly polarised into goodies and baddies'Cold War takes you back to these thrilling times, and you take the role of Matt Carter, a New York journalist who left the cosy existence of a staff writer for the dangerous world on international investigative freelancing. But on a mission to Moscow, everything goes a bit wrong, and Carter finds himself in a KGB detention cell, framed for a crime he hasn't committed. What will happen next is anyone's guess. Matt could find himself being packed off to a Siberian labour camp, or worse'summarily executed. He elects not to stay around and find out.He may earn his crust behind a typewriter but there's nothing bookish about Matt Carter. A troublesome, tinkering child, his father envisaged him finding his niche as some sort of engineer. A working knowledge of gadgetry will stand him in good stead as he looks to steal Soviet gizmos to use against his would-be imprisoners. The most high-tech device is a prototype camera that knocks enemies out with a radioactive beam, and also allows you to see through walls. This is at the higher end of things though and you'll also have to make use of slingshots, cigarettes (European-bait, apparently) and alarm clocks.Of course, the Russians are still convinced you've done something and after your repeated attempts to uncover Soviet conspiracies they don't much like you. See if you can sneak and spy your way through the stern, impenetrable splendour of 80s Moscow. And maybe even get a scoop on the way out, eh'
