First appearing on the Sony PSone, the Brave Fencer Musashi is the creation of Tetsuya Nomura, the character design genius behind Square Enix's Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts games.It's been a while, but Musashi now returns to fight for justice on the PS2 in another humorous action-adventure game. As usual, a princess is in trouble, this time one going by the almost microbe-like name of Mycella. Trying to avoid capture, she sends out a sort of intergalactic distress call, summoning Musashi to a new and strange world across space and time. He'll have to use all his sword-related skills if he's to rescue her from a sinister threat'the threat of the evil Gandrake. This wicked chap wants to harness the powers of Mycella's people, the Mystics, as an energy source for a devilish machine he's designed.Cel-shaded effects are nothing new these days but that doesn't stop Musashi's anime stylings from being eye-wateringly nice to look at - there are plenty of whooshy effects in this slick slice-em-up. Gameplay is interesting too, with the ability to customise and design your own fighting style. Learn to focus your energies for greatest effect, young one, and study the techniques of your opponents and use them as you see fit. Armed with a trusty Japanese Katana blade, you can use the sword to deflect enemy attacks, or lock on Zelda-style (this also allows you to charge your Focus gauge). Remain focused long enough, and you'll study the skills of your opponent and flip reverse on him, using them against him. As you'd expect from such an athletic young buck, Musashi can swing and climb and generally otherwise impose his manhood on his surroundings.
