Quite possibly the strangest cartoon creation of all time (and surely the result of some artist enjoying some 'special' brownies), SpongeBob Squarepants is back for his second outing on home console with the release of this latest 3D platformer, Battle for Bikini Bottom. As the title more than suggests, that is precisely the case, as the evil Plankton is pursuing a diabolical plot to (wait for it...) take over the world, leaving the fate of the aforementioned subterranean suburbia in the hands of the peculiar protagonist and a couple of his friends.That particular diabolical plot involves an invention called the Duplicatotron 3000 - a device that has the power to create an army of robots. Where this plot falls somewhat short of the mark, however, is the fact that, rather stupidly, Plankton neglected to turn on the 'obey Plankton' switch (Doh!) and so now the robots are running amok all over Bikini Bottom.The game itself sees players take on the role of SpongeBob, Patrick Star or Sandy Cheeks and explore the game's expansive underwater world, meeting a host of familiar friends, whilst attempting to put an end to the evil scheme. Each character has possesses an array of unique moves and abilities, which present various different advantages when dealing with the game's array of nasties. SpongeBob, for example, can use his Bubble Wand to pull off a range of attacks such as the Bubble Bounce and Bubble Bash. Patrick Star is the big tough guy of the trio and, as such, is able to pick up and throw most things, as well as perform belly flops and bumps. Lastly, Sandy, in a kind of Bruce Lee meets John Wayne way, can do powerful karate chops and has a lasso.If you're a fan of the exploits of SpongeBob then you'll most likely enjoy the opportunity to explore the depths of the famous Bikini Bottom. It's as crazy as the cartoon in parts, which makes for quite entertaining play in what is otherwise a pretty average platformer.
