Inspired by The Rock's blockbuster movie spin-off, The Scorpion King, Vivendi's 3D sting-em-up of the same name gets a PlayStation2 release just in time for merry old Christmas.Going back to the routes of the Scorpion King, Rise of the Akkadian tells the tale of Mathayus' adventures and the events leading to his gruesome arachnid metamorphosis, albeit in the guise of Tomb Raider for women.An adventure game with a heavy dose of fist-to-face combat and the occasional projectile weapon, Rise of the Akkadian spends about half the adventure seeing players collecting valuable ammunition for use against the ultimate evil's myriad cohorts. The rest of the game is more strongly related to exploration. Solving mysteries and puzzles in Rise of the Akkadian is unavoidable, and plays a vital role, breaking up gameplay into distinct sections. This prevents repetitive gameplay, and will prove a welcome addition to even the most beat-em-up-crazed gamer.Twelve environments in total play host to the future Scorpion King's journey, spanning real locations such as the Isle of Crete, as well as several slightly more imaginative locales including Netherworld. Moving from one objective to another, the seamless cut-scenes and fluid narrative help to make Rise of the Akkadian as diverse as possible without breaking the flow of gameplay. It features the voice of the Rock too. Bonus!Rise of the Akkadian is a fine adventure that, for all its Indiana Jones-style quirks, is still a unique game well worth playing.
